          Your baby’s development

          Can you say weight gain?

The thirtieth week of pregnancy is the beginning of your final trimester and your baby continues to steadily add weight and important insulating fat layers to his body.

At 30 weeks, he weighs about 1.36 kilograms and is about 27 cm long from or about the length of a bunch of celery. His legs and feet increase this measurement by many more cm.

Here’s what else to expect in his development this week:
          • From now until week 37, your baby will gain an impressive 0.22 kilograms a week.
          • Your baby might be practicing breathing movements as he rhythmically moves his diaphragm. You may notice a slight twitching in your abdomen when this happens.
          • His brain continues to expand and develop; creating additional room that will support his learning and development throughout his lifetime.
          • Your baby’s brain can now regulate his body temperature, so he begins to lose the lanugo– the fine hair that has been covering his body for warmth.

          Keeping it healthy.

You’re probably busy preparing for your baby’s arrival. So it’s reasonable that you’ll have less and less time for menu planning. If you find yourself reaching for convenience foods, keep a focus on the right portion size. Here are a few healthier substitutions to consider:

          Things to think about now

          What’s that numbness or tingling?

When you’re 30 weeks pregnant, it’s possible that your growing uterus might press on nerves in your legs and arms. This can cause your legs, toes, or arms to tingle. This is completely normal and it will disappear after your baby’s birth.

          Breastfeeding Disclaimer

Breastfeeding is the best source of infant nutrition. Good maternal nutrition is important for the preparation and maintenance of breastfeeding. When thinking of using infant formula, a mother should be aware of

          1. the financial and social implications of formula feeding,
          2. the difficulty of reversing the decision not to breastfeed and
          3. the care that must be taken to prevent partial formula feeding from interfering with lactation.

In addition, proper preparation of powder or concentrated liquid infant formula requires the use of boiled water for the purposes of mixing formula and cleaning implements and the manufacturer’s mixing instructions must always be followed. Improper mixing or preparation may make a baby sick. A healthcare professional should always be consulted before initiating formula feeding.
