          Your baby’s development

Coming to his senses: an increased sense of touch.

Your baby is starting to discover a world around him/her as his senses continue to develop. In a woman's pregnancy at 22 weeks, her baby’s brain and nerve endings progress enough to process the sensation of touch.

During your twenty second week of pregnancy:
          • Your baby is about 20 cm long, about the length of a head of cabbage, and weighs about 0.45 kg.
          • Your baby’s reproductive system continues to develop. Testes begin to descend in boys, and a girl’s ovaries and uterus are now in place as her vagina develops.
          • Though they’re muffled behind amniotic fluid and vernix, your baby continues to hear sounds from the outside world and will soon recognize your voice.

          Your nutrition and health

Childbirth is in a class by itself.

During your second trimester (months 4-6 of pregnancy), increase your caloric intake daily. How much weight you need to gain depends on many things, including your pre-pregnancy weight. Do not use weight loss diets during pregnancy. You need calories and nutrients for your baby’s healthy growth and development. It’s best to consult with your doctor about your individual weight gain.

          Things to think about now

          Your 22nd week checkup.

You’re probably planning a visit to your doctor for another prenatal visit around the 22nd week of pregnancy. Here’s what you can expect:
You’re probably planning a visit to your doctor for another prenatal visit around the 22nd week of pregnancy. Here’s what you can expect:
          • Similar to previous prenatal checkups, your doctor checks both your health and your baby’s progress.
          • Your doctor may discuss an upcoming glucose screening – a routine test that checks for gestational diabetes. You might take this test at your next appointment, sometime between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy.

          What happens next week?

          Preparing to breathe.

Your baby’s lungs develop rapidly during week 23 of pregnancy. She’s also moving amniotic fluid in and out of her lungs as a warm up to breathing.

          Breastfeeding Disclaimer

Breastfeeding is the best source of infant nutrition. Good maternal nutrition is important for the preparation and maintenance of breastfeeding. When thinking of using infant formula, a mother should be aware of

          1. the financial and social implications of formula feeding,
          2. the difficulty of reversing the decision not to breastfeed and
          3. the care that must be taken to prevent partial formula feeding from interfering with lactation.

In addition, proper preparation of powder or concentrated liquid infant formula requires the use of boiled water for the purposes of mixing formula and cleaning implements and the manufacturer’s mixing instructions must always be followed. Improper mixing or preparation may make a baby sick. A healthcare professional should always be consulted before initiating formula feeding.
