In boys, the prostate gland is forming. In girls, the ovaries are moving into the pelvis.

The thyroid gland is now producing hormones during pregnancy at 14 weeks

          Teeny, tiny, little hormones.

While many areas of your baby's body continue to refine, much of the development this week focuses on the reproductive system:
          • When you're at your fourteenth week of pregnancy, your baby is probably about the length of your clenched fist.
          • In boys, the prostate gland is forming. In girls, ovaries are moving into the pelvis from the abdominal area.

          • By now your baby's palate, or the roof of his mouth, has completely formed.
          • Your baby already might be growing body hair, called lanugo, which will temporarily keep him warm until fat accumulates.
          • His head will grow to four times its current size and increase 60 times in volume by birth.

          Your nutrition and health

Convenient (yet healthy) is the name of the game.

The more convenient the food, the more likely you'll reach for it first. Here are a couple of tips to help you make better food choices:
          • When you are at home, keep healthy choices within reach. The easier it is to grab something healthy, the more likely you’ll eat it.
          • When you’re away from home, bring a healthy snack choice with you to help you stay away from less healthy fare.

          Prepack your snacks

To further reduce temptation at home or work, pack and keep your own nutritionally balanced snacks close at hand. Here are some healthy snack suggestions:
          • 15 grams toasted almonds with dried cranberries or apricots
          • Peanut butter (or cheese) and crackers, and 1 cup of skimmed milk or low-fat yogurt
          • One orange or banana and 30 grams of cheese or 2 tablespoons of peanut butter
          • One low-fat granola bar and 1 cup of orange juice

          Things to think about now

Letting the cat out of the bag.

As you get closer to childbirth in the months ahead, you’ll probably start making plans for you and your baby. Some things you should be thinking about:
          • Now would be an ideal time to examine your maternity and paternity policies at work, if you haven't already.
          • Begin looking at child-care options if you think you will need them. Daycare waiting lists can be years long.

          What happens next week?

          Heartburn, that’s what.

While your baby is developing cute features like eyebrows and skin, you might develop heartburn.

          Breastfeeding Disclaimer

Breastfeeding is the best source of infant nutrition. Good maternal nutrition is important for the preparation and maintenance of breastfeeding. When thinking of using infant formula, a mother should be aware of

          1. the financial and social implications of formula feeding,
          2. the difficulty of reversing the decision not to breastfeed and
          3. the care that must be taken to prevent partial formula feeding from interfering with lactation.

In addition, proper preparation of powder or concentrated liquid infant formula requires the use of boiled water for the purposes of mixing formula and cleaning implements and the manufacturer’s mixing instructions must always be followed. Improper mixing or preparation may make a baby sick. A healthcare professional should always be consulted before initiating formula feeding.
